Excel is an electronic spreadsheet program that can be used for storing, organizing and manipulating the data. You can use it to organize your data into row or columns. You can also use it to perform mathematical calculation quickly. An accountant uses excel to keep track of transactions for their company. Students might use excel to help draw conclusions from the data they gathered on a science project.

Excel is a powerful spreadsheet program that allows users to organize data, complete calculations, make decisions, graph data, develop professional-looking reports, publish organized data to the Web, and access real-time data from Web sites.

The four major parts of Excel are :

  • Workbooks and Worksheets – A workbook is like a notebook. Inside the workbook are sheets, each of which is called a worksheet. In other words, a workbook is a collection of worksheets. Worksheets allow users to enter, calculate, manipulate, and analyse data such as numbers and text. The terms worksheet are interchangeable.

  • Charts – Excel can draw a variety of charts.

  • Tables – Tables organize and store data within worksheets. For example, once a users enters data into a worksheets, an Excel table can sort the data, search for specific data, and select data that satisfies defined criteria.

  • Web Support – Web support allows users to save Excel worksheets or parts of a worksheets in HTML format, so that a user can view and manipulate the worksheet using a browser. Excel Web support also provides access to real-time data, such as stock quotes, using Web queries.

Functions

Functions are predefined formulas that perform calculations by using specific values, called arguments, in a particular order, or structure. Functions can be used to perform simple or complex calculations. For example, the average function finds the average of a specified range of cells (=AVERAGE(A1: A5)). Functions can be typed directly in the cells or can be used using Insert Function.

There are various categories of functions:

The Excel windows consists of a variety of components to make your work more efficient and worksheets more professional.

Scroll Bars - You use a scroll bar to displays different portions of a worksheet in the worksheet window. At the right edge of the worksheet window is a vertical scroll bar. A horizontal scroll bar also appears at the bottom of the worksheet window. On a scroll bar, the position of the scroll box reflects the location of the worksheet that is displayed in the worksheet window.

Status Bar – The status bar, located at the bottom of the window worksheet, present information about worksheet, the progress of current tasks, and the status of certain commands and keys: it also provides controls for viewing the worksheet. As you type text or perform certain tasks, various indicators and buttons may appear on the status bar.

Ribbon – The Ribbon, located near the top of the window below the title bar, is the control center in Excel. The Ribbon provides easy, central access to the tasks you perform while creating a workbook. The Ribbon consists of tabs, groups, and commands.
